About Lacrosse
Lacrosse is a team sport of Native American origin that is played using a small solid rubber ball and a long-handled racquet called a crosse or lacrosse stick. The head of the lacrosse stick is strung with loose netting that is designed to hold the lacrosse ball. Offensively, the objective of the game is to use the lacrosse stick to catch, carry, and pass the ball in an effort to score by ultimately hurling the ball into an opponent's goal. Defensively the object is to keep the opposing team from scoring and to dispossess them of the ball through the use of stick checking and body contact or positioning. There are three main versions of the sport; men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse and box lacrosse.
The Riverton High School Lacrosse team was founded in 2006 by Head Coach Larry Ferdig and a hand-full of Lacrosse players from the cross-town rival Bingham High School Team. In the first year the team was able to field a JV and Varsity team. The varsity team played competitively throughout the season and made it through to the playoffs losing to Skyline in the first round. The second year team took first place in its division and also went to the playoff losing to Orem in the second round. In 2009, the team took third in state with a 15-4 record.
Riverton High School Lacrosse is not affiliated with Riverton High School and is part of the Utah Lacrosse Association. USA Lacrosse is the governing body of the league.
Women's lacrosse is the oldest sport in northern america and is fast and physically demanding. To be successful at the sport, one must possess strength, endurance and hand-eye coordination.

Equipment Needed for Lacrosse
To play lacrosse you must own the following:
Goggles: Protect your eyes and must be worn at practices and games. Goggles cost $30 to $80. I recommend STX 4sight Pro $66 or Poly Air Women's $44. It's important that you try before you buy. In other words, make sure the goggles are comfortable on your head.
Mouthguard: You must have a sports specific mouth guard. IT CANNOT BE CLEAR OR WHITE. We will be going to Dr. Watson's practice to have custom-made mouth guards free of charge. Otherwise I recommend the cheapest youth football mouth guards. It's best to have two or three as they tend to get lost.
Lacrosse Stick (Crosse): Women's specific lacrosse stick. $30 to hundreds.
Cleats: Soccer or Lacrosse specific shoes. Some players play with grippy running shoes or turf shoes.
Uniforms and warm ups: Team uniforms will be provided to JV and Varsity players. Warm ups are purchased by the players.
Performance Thermals: Lacrosse is played in the spring, but is a cold-weather sport. It is optional but essential to have a good set off warm tights. I highly recommend UA Cold Gear Compression Mock Turtle Neck $50 and UA Cold Gear Compression Tights $40. Thermals should be BLACK. Performance tights or spankies may be worn but must be black.
Accessories: Under Armour gloves or lacrosse specific gloves are optional and used in cold weather. Beanies may be worn in cold weather. Lacrosse stick bags are a good way to protect your stick and keep all your equipment together. Players can order bags through the team with their name on it. (About $50). Lacrosse players are expected to have their hair worn up in a pony tail. Jewelry of any kind is not allowed. Braces may be worn but must be approved by the officials.

Sadee Hansen was one of the Team Captains for the '09 3rd place Varsity squad and now plays for the one and only BYU cougars. GO SADEE!
Goalie Lauren Madsen clears the ball to her teamates. She hasn't missed a game in three years and played through mono in '09. Lacrosse players are a tough breed.
