Riverton finishes an amazing season strong, with an emotional loss to Park City. On a beautiful spring day, the Riverton Girls Varsity team travelled to an away game on a non-neutral field to play the undefeated Park City Miners team for the 2014 State Championship. The game was a back and forth physical battle with the Riverton team going up by a goal 8-7 with 6 minutes left. The Miners came storming back to take the victory with 4 straight goals. It was an exciting game and the girls played their hearts out until their very last breath. The saddest part of the day was saying good bye to the seniors Avree Frost, Mikala Anderson, Morgan Frampton, Nic Larson, Nikki Thomas, Kelsey Brown and Dani Gailey. Those girls have been playing together for 8 long years, almost half their lives. We will miss them tremendously!!!
What a great year for the team with all they accomplished and the friendships and legacy they leave behind! TOLB!

Silverwolves Lacrosse Team Looks Back On Second Place At State
July 10, 2014 | By Greg James
The Silverwolves girls lacrosse team finished off its 2014 season with a loss in the championship game 11-8 to Park City.
The close of the girls lacrosse season marked the end of an era for many Riverton High School players. Graduation broke up the team, but before it was over, they managed to place second at the state tournament. "We thought this was going to be a special year for our team. We have had a core of girls that has played together since seventh grade. It is like a family; it is sad to see it come to an end," head coach David Oka said.
The Silverwolves faced the Park City Miners in the championship game. The game was tied four times including 5-5 at halftime. Riverton led 8-7 on a goal by Paige Rutledge with 11 minutes remaining. "Park City was undefeated, and they have a lot of talented players. We knew they would be challenging, but we played well," Oka said. Park City pulled away scoring the game's final four goals and stalled for the victory, 11-8.
The Silverwolves' defense was led by honorable mention All-American goalie Mikala Anderson. She has signed to play lacrosse at Westminster College. She ended the season with a 59 percent save percentage, tops in the state. She was also first team all-state goalie. "Mikala improved this season. She has a great future," Oka said.
Avree Frost led the Silverwolves in goals scored with 29. She was voted by her teammates as the team's MVP. Morgan Frampton and Katie Oka were both awarded first team all-state honors. Rutledge was named second team. "Paige is very fast and has become a great offensive mid-fielder for us. Morgan has also been an important player for us," Oka said. Rutledge led the team with 43 ground balls (turnovers created). She also scored 21 goals as the team's third leading scorer. Frampton was second on the team in scoring with 24 goals. Rutledge, Kelsey Brown and Nicole Larson led the team in face-offs won.
The Silverwolves finished the regular season 6-1, first place in the Division-1 South Conference. Their only loss came against Alta 8-7. They defeated Skyline 11-4 in the first round of the playoffs and Brighton 12-11 to advance to the finals.
"These girls work hard, and being a club sport, we do not get the recognition that other sports get. It is great to see what they have done," Oka said. Oka was named the Division-1 coach of the year.

Juan Diego answered when Mara Gronseth got the goal to tie the game. Paige Rutledge answered for Riverton at the 17:18 mark but Juan Diego answered with two goals of their own, back-to-back, within 12 seconds of each other, to take a 3-2 lead. Nikki Thomas tied the game for Riverton at the 7:24 mark which would be the last goal of the first half, making it 3-3 at halftime. Brooke Gray – c/o ShootingStar Photography The second half was just as stingy with each team only scoring two goals. Rutledge starting things off for Riverton when Tess Campbell led a fast break and found Rutledge wide open behind the defense. The pass was tipped, but Rutledge caught the pass and buried it into the back of the net. Juan Diego answered when Hannah Edwards scored off a nice roll back spin at GLE, then dumped it in. Gronseth gave Juan Diego the lead when she dodged from the wing and hit the top shelf for the goal. Riverton would tie the game with 3 minutes left off a free-position goal scored by Rutledge. The Silverwolves had a chance to win it in regulation, but Juan Diego Goalie Alexis Womble came up big with a huge one-on-one stuff on the crease to keep the game tied. In the first half of overtime, Katie Oka scored early for Riverton, capitalizing on a Juan Diego defensive mistake. Riverton added to their lead when Avree Frost circled the defense and found space on the left side, shooting and scoring. In the second half of overtime, Juan Diego pulled within one when Gronseth scored on a free-position opportunity. With just a minute left, Juan Diego was award a free-position opportunity, then another, then another. On the last one, the Riverton defenders were moved behind everyone the 8, so it was one-on-one, Gronseth v. Riverton Goalie Mikala Anderson. The whistle blew and Gronseth drove and shot high, but Anderson also went high and preserved the win for the Silverwolves who cleared and killed the clock. “Every time she got one I just refocused and thought about the fundamentals,” said Anderson. “I’ve been studying Mara all season. I just trusted myself that I could do it.” Anderson finished with 10 saves while Womble had 5. Riverton controlled 11 of 17 draws. “That Alta game was a disappointment for us,” said Riverton Head Coach David Oka. “We’re a resilient team and we trust each other. We’re all about defense and that’s what won it for us today.” Riverton will host Corner Canyon on Thursday. The Soaring Eagle will face Bingham on April 23. From Salt Lake Tribune Nevada angler catches Utah woman’s long-gone memories Utahn thought photos, videos were gone for good when she dropped camera into Lake Tahoe.
By Brett Prettyman | The Salt Lake Tribune First Published Jan 29 2014 08:52 am For a few minutes after the splash, Jana LeVitre hoped she could get her camera back from the bottom of the amazingly clear waters of Lake Tahoe. The Pentax camera was, after all, waterproof. But when somebody on the sailboat told her the water below was 150 to 200 feet deep, she reluctantly bid adieu to a collection of more than 1,000 photos and videos taken over five years. "I was really bummed. I lost a lot of memories that day," LeVitre said of sailing on the lake straddling the Nevada and California border in September 2011. "I realized I’d just have to remember them in my mind. I never expected to see them again." But last week, she saw an image she had lost — on her Facebook page. "Is this you? Or a very close look-alike?" asked the Facebook friend who posted the photo. Stephen Garnett was just hoping to catch a lake trout when he ventured out with a friend for some fishing Jan. 19 on Lake Tahoe. He ended up hooking a fishing story that stretched all the way to South Jordan, Utah. The day did not start well. Garnett was trolling about 8 a.m., when he felt what he thought was a hit from a fish. As he started reeling, the line went slack; it had snapped. He found a different reel with line and put out a new lure while passing over the same place where he had felt the bite. The two were about a quarter mile from shore near a place called Cave Rock and fishing their lures about 200 feet deep along the bottom. Garnett again felt the sensation of a fish biting, but it was not as strong. He reeled up the line to see what was happening. "It looked like seaweed and then I saw the shininess of it," Garnett said from his home in South Reno. "I got it up and dangling from my hook was this camera. Well, at first I thought it was a cellphone." Around 2 p.m. and with four fish, the anglers called it quits. Garnett was eager to get home and share his catch. "He didn’t say much; he just had fun, and handed me the camera and said, ‘Look what I caught today,’ " said Jamie Clark, a hobby photographer and Garnett’s wife. "It was a wild tale, not about what was lost, but what was caught." The couple laughed and then realized the memory card was still in the camera. "We said how funny it would be to put the card in our computer," Clark said, "that there was probably some wild spring break party photos or something like that." They did find party photos, although not so wild, of families and friends enjoying another large Western water — Lake Powell. There were typical family photos and some of a girls’ lacrosse team with "Riverton" across the jersey. There was also a selfie taken just before the camera went for its dip. Clark decided the photos were special and needed to be returned to the owner. She posted them on her own Facebook page and figured her chain of friends would help spread the word. "At the very most I thought the camera had been there since last fall. The first photos I looked at were from 2006 and they went up until September 2011," Clark said. "There were 1,065 photos and a handful of videos. I took two photos from each year and posted them on Facebook." Christopher Jones, a friend in Utah, shared the photos on his Facebook page and that triggered a couple of responses. LeVitre’s friend posted a photo from the sunken camera on her page that showed LeVitre with her mother and a cousin. The Riverton Silverwolves Lacrosse page also showed a photo of a girls’ team, asking "Who took this picture?" LeVitre is not a big Facebook user, so the post from her friend sat on her page for a while before a daughter called on Jan. 24 and told her to look at it. That was just after noon on Jan. 24. By that evening, LeVitre and Clark were on the phone laughing about the crazy story. "Most people wouldn’t go out of their way like that. I so appreciate their efforts," LeVitre said. "I need to tell thank you to a lot of people." The camera, and its memory card, is headed back to Utah, and LeVitre has plans for her old friend. "I want to shadowbox it and put some sand on the bottom and have it in my house," she said. "It will be a reminder of the fun story and the great people who made it happen." |
