Game Day: TIPS to Prepare for that important game
RHS Girls:
You know you've done it. And I admit I've done it before too. You've just pulled into the playing field parking lot and are pyched up for the big game. You get to the side line and rummage through that smelly stick bag of yours and, oh no, not again...you forgot your cleats. You call you mom and for the next 30 minutes she's buzzing all the stop signs to retrieve your forgotten item. Sounds familiar? Sounds stressful? Honestly girls, I'd rather be your coach than your baby sitter! So here's a few tips to keep you non-stressed and in the zone on that all important game day:
1. Preparation starts the night before. YOU launder your uniform both home and away. Remember your favorite socks, underarmour, and stuff. Lay it out in your room, ready to roll. I hate it when my girl's complain about dirty uniforms or missing gloves 10 minutes before we leave. ARGH!!!
2. Keep all your stuff in your stick bag and recheck it the night before.
3. Know your schedule and figure out your ride. If you are driving, MAP QUEST it just in case. Make sure you allow extra travel time to get there AT LEAST AN HOUR before your game.
4. Figure out a game day meal ritual. Often times athletes eat the same thing before every game. This keeps your body from freaking out if you eat something funny. Figure out what your body responds to the best and stick with it. Do not eat grease or junk food before the game. We'll talk pregame meals later.
5. If you need taping, better to do it at the field. If you need help, let us coaches know or have a teammate help you. Plan for extra taping time. I do not want you taping at warm ups!!! I will be providing some tape for the team, but you should bring some if you always need taping.
6. Lacrosse is a VERY COLD SPORT!!! ALWAYS OVER PREPARE for the cold. Pack underarmour, gloves, extra socks, beanie and a hoodie. Have an old blanket in your car. Throw some disposable hand warmers in your bag (you'll thank me for this tip). "You can always not wear something you have; but you can't wear something you don't have." That's a ancient Japanese proverb by me.
7. Prepare your water bottle the night before.
8. If it looks like rain, wear water proof gloves and socks. You're welcome to bring an umbrella.
9. Take off all your jewelry before you leave!!!
10. Okay, your getting in your car or your parent's mini van. All ready to go right? Not yet!!! Verbally go through your check list: Stick? Check. Mouthguard? Check. Goggles? Check. Uniform? Check...you get the picture.
11. Alright. Cell phones off, seat belts on...get to the field.
12. Once at the field: start your pregame preparations; even if you're early. Be proactive!!! Don't wait until the coach or captains tell you what to do...own it!
13. Game time. Now, go punch someone in the mouth! Or, you know what I mean.
